Catching Up

There was so much going on this weekend it was difficult to keep up. The weekend started with new music. On Friday, new R&B dropped along with Juice Wrld’s posthumous album. Entertainment news continued when Jada Pickett Smith and Will Smith came to the Red Table to discuss recent allegations of an alleged affair with August Alsina. The chaos rolled on when popular apps like Spotify and Pinterest crashed over the weekend. No, it wasn’t because of entanglements. Even though the world continues to resemble some forms of normalcy, the coronavirus is still active across several countries and states. As states continue to report record highs in new cases, the White House is currently seeking to discredit the country's top infectious disease expert Dr. Fauci.

New Music Friday was full of R&B vibes with new music from Summer Walker, Snoh Aalegra, and a new Kane Brown, Swae Lee, and Khalid collab.

  • Summer Walker didn’t disappoint with a new EP called Life On Earth. The 5 track project features Partynextdoor.

  • Snoh Aalegra kept the vibes going dropping a new song called DYING 4 YOUR LOVE.

  • Kane Brown, Swae Lee, and Khalid dropped a new record called Be Like That.

  • Juice Wrld’s posthumous album Legends Never Die was released. The album is set to debut at number 1, with projections of close to 400,000-440,000 units.


Spotify, Pinterest & Tinder and other ios apps were down due to an issue with Facebook log in early Friday morning. Thousands of users reported difficulty accessing popular apps like Tinder and Spotify while using an iPhone or iPad. The issue has since been resolved.


Glee actress Naya Rivera has been missing since Wednesday after going on a boat trip with her son at a California late. Her 4-year son was found safe, drifting in the boat. He told local authorities, both he and Rivera jumped into the lake but she never returned. The search to find the 33-year-old actress has now been deemed a recovery mission.



Fox News host Tucker Carlon’s top writer has resigned after racist and sexist comments of his on an online forum were exposed. The writer, Jeff Neff posted his racist, sexist and homophobic comments under an alias for years. Neff tended his resignation after these posts came to the light. Since his resignation, Fox News has sent a memo to employees denouncing his comments and behavior.


The memo wrote:

Neff's abhorrent conduct on this forum was never divulged to the show or the network until Friday, at which point we swiftly accepted his resignation..
Make no mistake, actions such as his cannot and will not be tolerated at any time in any part of our workforce.

ESPN NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, known as ‘Woj‘ has been suspended after sending a profane email to Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.


Woj’s response to an email the Senator planned to send to the NBA commissioner was made public this weekend. In a news release, the Senator described his letter to NBA commissioner Adam Silver criticizing the league for monitoring and censoring social justice messages that players will wear on their jerseys.


In the letter to the commissioner he wrote:

free expression appears to stop at the edge of your corporate sponsors’ sensibilities...

Woj was reportedly suspended after responding to the Senator's letter with an email saying "F*** you."

After news broke of Woj's reported suspension, several athletes took to social media to express support for the longtime NBA reporter. He has since apologized for his actions.



After being closed for nearly 4 months due to the pandemic, Walt Disney World reopened to the public on Saturday morning. Despite the park reopening, Florida has continued to see a surge in new cases.


182,000 new cases have been reported since June 5, two weeks after Disney World made their reopening announcement. With infections still on the rise, strict social distancing guidelines will be in place.


Visitors are required to have their temperature checked before entry. Face masks are also mandatory for both park employees and visitors.

Washington’s NFL team is planning to announce a change to its team name this morning, according to three people with knowledge of the situation.


The recent decision to change the name comes after a nationwide social revolution regarding race. Redskins’s owner Dan Snyder previously said he would never change the 87-year old team name, which is considered to be a racist slur against Native Americans. On July 2, sponsors begin to express concern over the name and request that it be changed.


FedEx was the first to publicly ask for the name to be changed. In a letter to Redskins owner Dan Synder, FedEx, which owns naming rights to the Redskins stadium, also warned it would take the name company's name off their stadium (FedEx Field) if it isn't changed.


After mounting pressure from fans and other sponsors like PepsiCo, Nike, and Bank of America, on July 3rd the team announced it would conduct a “thorough review” of the team's name. The team is now expected to announce its new name later this morning.


Former South African President and hero Nelson Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi Mandela has died at age 59. Also, the daughter of activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Zindzi Mandela was currently serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark.


She unfortunately passed in a hospital in Johannesburg. Her cause of death is unknown at this time.


After announcing his intention to run for president in the 2020 race, Kanye West has continued to buckle down on his plan. In an interview with Forbes, he revealed that he’s no longer a Trump supporter.


He added that he will run in opposition to Trump under his own party called the Birthday Party. He plans to receive guidance from his wife Kim Kardashian and Space X owner Elon Musk.



President Trump’s former longtime attorney Michael Cohen is heading back to federal custody after violating his home confinement agreement, reported to MSNBC by Cohen’s attorney. Cohen was released from federal prison less than two months ago due to COVID-19 concerns.


He was set to serve out his three- year sentence under home confinement. After violating the conditions of his confinement, he has been remanded back to federal custody.



A recent interview from leading infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci with Financial Times where the scientist revealed he hasn’t briefed the President in almost two months, has seemed to cause problems with him and the White House.


Earlier this week in an exclusive interview with Financial Times, Dr. Fauci revealed he last saw President Trump on June 2nd, almost two months ago. Since this interview, the White House has seemingly gone on a mission, looking to discredit the doctor.


On Sunday a White House official revealed that several other White House officials have expressed concern over Dr. Fauci’s recent and past discrepancies regarding COVID-19.

NBC was also given several statements from Dr. Facui that have been proven to be untrue.

Beijing Tech giant ByteDance owns the popular Chinese app TikTok which has caused a lot of controversy in the United States recently. This week America’s fourth-largest bank Wells Fargo has directed its employees to delete the app over security concerns. Wells Fargo explained their decision in a statement to NBC News on Saturday.


Statement to NBC News on Saturday:

Due to concerns about TikTok’s privacy and security controls and practices, and because corporate-owned devices should be used for company business only, we have directed those employees to remove the app from their devices.

The controversy surrounding Tiktok continued when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed the United States is considering banning TikTok and other Chinese apps. On Friday, Amazon also clarified that it was not instructing its employees to do the same after it was reported the company sent a memo instructing them to do so.


The company made its stance clear in a statement on Friday:

This morning’s email to some of our employees was sent in error. There is no change to our policies right now with regard to TikTok.

Today makes 5 years since Sandra Bland was found dead in her jail cell after a confrontation with police during a traffic stop. She was in police custody in a Walker County jail cell in Texas, when she was found 'hanging'. Her death was ruled a suicide.


The circumstances that lead to and proceeded her death sparked outraged the country. Her family is still demanding justice.
