Sports Corner: The LA Lakers are the 2020 NBA Champions + COVID-19 in the NFL Week 5

This post is long overdue.

Sports is one of my biggest passions.

Since a kid, I’ve always been a sports fanatic. Originally that’s the reason why I majored in Journalism and Mass Communications. My dream was to be a sports journalist or analyst. I told myself I would become the female Stephen A. Smith or a younger version of Doris Burke.

It’s time to put that into action.

Even though we’re in the middle of a pandemic, the sports world is in full swing.

It’s been interesting to see how the different leagues are containing the virus.

I think the NBA has set the standard on how to successfully end a season without any COVID-19 clusters or outbreaks.

NBA

There was a lot of doubt and uncertainty when NBA commissioner Adam Silver initially announced the return of the NBA in early June.

Many were unsure how safe it would be. In addition, to be concerned how an NBA season could distract or disrupt the Black Lives Matter Movement for social justice and equality after the killing of George Floyd.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the NBA Bubble season was a huge success. Not only were the NBA successful in containing the virus, but they also used the NBA bubble as a platform for activism.

After an entertaining Bubble, The NBA season is over. The Los Angeles Lakers are the 2020 NBA champions after beating the Miami Heat 106-93 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

The Miami Heat, who had been the shock of the bubble lead by Jimmy Butler, could not contain Lebron James and Rajon Rondo on Sunday night.

Lebron James is now a 4-time NBA champion.

Jeanie Buss became the first female controlling owner to win an NBA Championship, as the Lakers clinched their 17th banner.

This is a big win for the Lakers after the loss of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, early this year, who played for the Lakers his entire career, winning 6 championships before his retirement.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Giannis was not the first Antetokounmpo to win an NBA Championship title. His brother Kostas Antetokounmpo won one as a player for the Lakers.

With the completion of the NBA bubble season, it’s all about football now.

The NFL hasn’t been as successful as the NBA with containing COVID-19, but games are still being played.

Atlanta Falcons

After losing to the Carolina Panthers 23-16, The Atlanta Falcons are now 0-5 for the first time since 1997.

Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater threw for 316 yards and 2 TDs.

Shortly after the game, rumors started swirling that Dan Quinn’s job was in jeopardy after the Falcons disastrous start to the season.

The rumors were indeed true, Dan Quinn and General Manager Thomas Dimitroff were “relieved of their duties” on Sunday night.

Dan Quinn’s record is 14-28 since 2018 when the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead in SuperBowl LI against the New England Patriots.

Kansas City Chiefs

The reigning SuperBowl champions are no longer undefeated after losing to the Las Vegas Raiders 42-32.

Raiders QB Derek Carr had a highlight game, throwing darts across the field, racking up 347 yards and 3 TD’s. The Raiders are now 3-2, they were on a two-game losing streak until this victory.

Initially, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the game after a Chief head coach tested positive for the coronavirus.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are one of two teams who have had the biggest struggle containing the coronavirus.

Patriots QB Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 2 which caused the NFL to postpone the Patriots matchup against the Chiefs.

The game was eventually played the following day, on Monday Night Football. The final score was 26-10 Chiefs.

Following the Patriots loss, two additional players have tested positive, which has caused another Patriots game to be rescheduled.

The Washington Football Team

Alex Smith finally hit the field against the Los Angeles Rams after QB Kyle Allen suffered an injury.

This was Alex’s first time playing since his gruesome leg injury in 2018.

Despite the excitement, of Smith's return, the Washington football still loss 30-13.

The Washington Football now have a record of 1-4.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys 2-3 season has taken a turn for the worst after Dak Prescott’s possible season-ending injury versus the Giants on Sunday.

Up by one point in the third quarter, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott suffered a right ankle compound fracture and dislocation. Prescott successfully underwent surgery on Sunday night.

Despite losing their star QB, Andy Dalton led the Cowboys to victory 37-34.

The Giants are playing without their star RB Saquon Barkley who tore his ACL Week 2 against the Bears.

Monday Night Football

Primetime Monday Night Football between the Saints-Chargers was a nail bitter.

The Saints won 30-27 in an OT thriller.

Saints star WR Michael Thomas was benched for Monday’s game against the Chargers after an altercation with Chauncey Gardner-Johnson during practice.

End of Week 5

Week 5 officially ended, after a usual Tuesday night matchup between the Titans-Bills.

The Buffalo Bills were 4-0 before they lost 42-16.
